Aly and Flores to Graduate Friday
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior men’s tennis student-athletes Omar Aly and Gabriel Flores will graduate from the University of Miami during Spring Commencement exercises held Friday at the BankUnited Center.
Omar Aly, who hails from Edmond, Okla., will receive his BA degree in economics with a minor in psychology. He plans to look for wealth management jobs in the Miami area. He has been ranked as high as No. 70 in the nation in singles this season and has defeated a pair of Top 25 players in his senior campaign. He compiled 33 singles wins in his collegiate career, earning 14 just this season. In doubles, he has posted 30 victories in his four years at The U.
At commencement, Gabriel Flores will accept his BBA degree in international finance and marketing, then will return to his native Puerto Rico to work in investment consulting and attend law school. As a senior, he joined 34 Hurricanes in the 50-win club at Miami, posting 54 singles victories over his four seasons at Miami. This season he defeated a trio of Top 130 players in singles and one ranked doubles opponent. He has also earned 27 career doubles victories, including 11 this season.
Fellow senior Diego Soto will earn his bachelor’s degree in finance in December 2014. The native of Madrid, Spain, joined the Canes in January of 2011 and has since amassed 42 singles victories and 27 doubles wins. In his final season at UM, he led the team with 15 singles wins and 12 doubles victories, including a win over a Top 30 ranked doubles pair. In his final three seasons at The U, he averaged 13 singles wins per year, and in his junior campaign, he earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
This spring more than 3,500 University of Miami undergraduate and graduate students will begin a new chapter in their lives by graduating to new careers or graduate school, among other adventures. During Commencement ceremonies, which mark the launch of a new era in the lives of students, graduates from all of UM’s schools and colleges will be recognized by name and will walk across the stage to be congratulated by President Donna E. Shalala and their academic dean. With research papers, labs and final exams completed, these students will go on to embark on new journeys. According to a survey conducted by the UM Toppel Career Center on graduating students from last year (May 2013), 62 percent had full-time job offers within six months of graduation, with an average base annual starting salary of $47,700. Roughly 28 percent of that same graduating class enrolled in graduate school. The UM Commencement ceremony is open to graduates and their guests.
