W. Tennis Faces Pitt in First ACC Road Match

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team hits the road this weekend for their first two ACC road matches against Pittsburgh and NC State.

Miami (8-2, 4-0 ACC) heads to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a dual match against ACC newcomer Pittsburgh on Friday, Mar. 7 at 1 p.m.

“With Pittsburgh and N.C. State, we’re going to have to work on some things,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We’re going to most likely be playing indoor tennis, so we’re going to be a little out of our element. But if we bring the same focus to those matches that we brought last weekend, we should be fine.”

Pittsburgh (3-3, 0-3 ACC) is led by former Hurricanes’ assistant Alex Santos and has dropped their first three ACC matches of the spring to Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Maryland. The Panthers picked up their three victories against Morehead State, Youngstown State and Robert Morris.

After Friday’s match the Hurricanes will travel south to Raleigh, N.C., for a match against 64th-ranked NC State. The Wolfpack started the spring with a 6-0 record but have been tripped up in their last three matches. NC State is 1-2 in ACC play with win against Syracuse and two losses to No. 6 North Carolina and No. 15 Clemson.

The Hurricanes started off ACC play with a four-match home stand, picking up wins against Maryland, No. 22 Notre Dame, Boston College, and No. 19 Georgia Tech.

With a combined 14-3 record, No. 71 Stephanie Wagner and No. 40 Kelsey Laurente have been dominant at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots, but Monique Albuquerque leads the team with 10 singles victories.

Miami’s doubles teams have continued to get the job done, led by Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno’s 10-1 record. But in the spotlight most recently is Laurente and Melissa Bolivar for their win over the nation’s 3rd-ranked doubles team from Georgia Tech. As a group, Miami’s doubles teams have combined for a 10-1 record in ACC play.
