MTennis Opens Spring No. 55 in ITA

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team opens the spring 2014 season as the No. 55 team in the country, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings.

A season ago, Miami started the season as No. 60 and fluctuated throughout the campaign from as high as No. 50 to No. 70. UM ended the 2013 regular season as No. 55.

Miami is one of 10 ACC schools listed in the ITA poll, led by No. 1 Virginia, No. 7 Duke and No. 19 Wake Forest.

Coach Mario Rincon’s group will face a bevy of talented teams throughout the 2014 campaign. The Canes will play 13 teams that finished the 2013 season in the top 75 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. Of those 13 teams, four finished last season in the Top 25, including No. 1 Virginia, No. 7 Duke, No. 19 Wake Forest, and No. 21 Clemson.

The ACC proved strong in 2013, and all five ACC teams Miami hosts in Coral Gables this season finished 2013 ranked in the top 75, including No. 19 Wake Forest (March 21), No. 35 North Carolina State (March 23), No. 7 Duke (April 4), No. 52 North Carolina (April 6), and No. 37 Florida State (April 19).

Miami’s next match is on Sunday, January 19 when they travel to Orlando to take on in-state rival UCF.
