Larrañaga Notches 50th Win
With the win over Georgia Southern, Jim Larrañaga earned his 50th win as a Cane, just two years and two games into his tenure in Coral Gables. Coach L opened his first year with Miami with a 20-13 record, followed by a 29-7 mark his second campaign.
Sharing the Ball
Miami recorded 12 assists against GSU after having only five handouts in the season opener against St. Francis Brooklyn. The Canes have averaged 11.6 assists per game since the arrival of Coach L two seasons ago.
Poise at the Free Throw Line
Miami knocked down 25-of-29 (86.2%) free throws against Georgia Southern, hitting 5-of-5 in overtime. Freshman Davon Reed was 4-of-4 in the game, while classmate Manu Lecomte was 2-of-2, hitting the pair in the final nine seconds of the game to tie and go ahead of GSU.
In two games, Miami has averaged 24.5 made free throws per game. In Coach L’s previous two seasons, Miami have averaged 12.9 per game in 2012-13 and 13.8 per game in his first year.
We’re Going to Overtime (x2)
Miami has started the 2013-14 season with 10 extra minutes of gametime, after going to overtime two straight nights. The Canes have never started a season with a pair of overtime games, and the last time UM played back-to-back OT games was Feb. 2012, when Miami defeated Maryland in double OT, then downed Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in single OT.
Miami has never played three-straight OT games.
Miami for Three
Rion Brown hit Miami’s first 3-pointer 49:17 into the season. After going 0-15 against St. Francis Brooklyn, Brown hit UM’s first of six from distance against Georgia Southern. Four players contributed to the total, as Brown and Manu Lecomte each hit a pair, and Donnavan Kirk and Davon Reed each hit one.
The 0-15 from long distance was the first time the Hurricanes had not hit a three since December 25, 2012 against Indiana State. Prior to that game, the Hurricanes had made a 3-point basket in 354 straight games.
The Canes have now made at least one trey in 837 of 842 games since the NCAA adopted the 3-point shot in 1986.
Double-Double for DK
Donnavan Kirk posted his second-straight double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds, against Georgia Southern, after his 16-point, 10-rebound performance against St. Francis Brooklyn.
Prior to the game against SFB, Kirk had never recorded a double-double.
Kirk’s 18 points against GSU were a career high, topping his previous career high of 16, which he set against SFB.
After playing 17 games for the Canes in 2009-10 and 2010-11, Kirk transferred to DePaul where he played 54 games for the Blue Demons. After earning his degree in marketing with an emphasis in sales leadership from DePaul, Kirk transferred back to The U, where he is pursuing his masters in community and social change.
Stats in All of the Right Columns
Against GSU, freshman Manu Lecomte notched 12 points, four rebounds, one steal, a block and an assist, and had zero turnovers. The rookie PG had five points in the OT alone.
