@CanesMensTennis Plays Through Weather Delay
TULSA, OK. – After rain delayed the start of prequalifying at the 2013 Saint Francis ITA Men’s All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, OK, play resumed in time for the completion of singles matches by 12:30 A.M.
William Albanese, a six-foot sophomore, lost his opening round match 1-6, 4-6 to Jonas Dierkx of Iowa. Head coach Mario Rincon made note that Albanese had early command in the second set and was close to gaining the lead.
For Omar Aly, participating in the event struck close to home, as the Oklahoma native returned to the state that he was a high school five-star recruit. Despite a resilient effort, Aly fell to Vukasin Teofanovic of Marquette, 2-6, 4-6.
Like Albanese, Mario Rincon felt Aly had a chance to gain control of the second set. While the ball did not bounce their way Saturday, Rincon said, “They will have a chance to compete again tomorrow in the back draw.”
Albanese and Aly will participate in Sunday’s prequalifying bonus round. Albanese is slated to play against Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz of South Florida at 1:30 P.M. Aly will face Tuomas Manner of St. Mary’s at 3 P.M.
Prequalifying for the ITA Championships is Sept. 28-29. Qualifying matches, which begin September 30, run through October 2. Junior Wilfredo Gonzalez and senior Diego Soto will represent the Canes in the qualifying matches. The tournament will conclude with the main draw, which will be played Oct. 3-6.
The 2013 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships attracts some of the top players from around the country. Miami has four participants competing for the first men’s national title of the fall season.
