@CanesMensTennis Opens Fall Season
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team opens the fall season this weekend, splitting the squad between a pair of events across the country.
“We are playing two very prestigious individual tournaments this weekend,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “Our guys have been working really hard this past month, and they’re in much better shape now. They are eager to compete. We are looking forward to watching them play and seeing their progress.”
Four Hurricanes travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Championships, hosted at the University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center, while three others will play in the Bedford Cup – State of Florida Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.
Miami will be represented at the ITA All-American Championships in the qualifying singles draw by junior Wilfredo Gonzalez and senior Diego Soto, who are both also alternates for the qualifying doubles draw. Senior Omar Aly and sophomore William Albanese are in the prequalifying singles draw. Pre-qualifying for the event is Sept. 28-29, followed by qualifying matches Sept. 30- Oct. 2, then the main draw Oct. 3-6.
Junior Henrique Tsukamoto, sophomore Jack Murphy and freshman Bernard Tefel will participate in the Bedford Cup – State of Florida Championships. The Canes are part of an nine-team field which features 2013 NCAA Championship team Florida State as well as UNF, UCF, FAU, FAMU, FGCU, Stetson and Bethune-Cookman. The event will open on Thursday, Sept. 26 and finals will be held Sunday, Sept. 29.
