No. 55 MTennis to Host No. 52 Va. Tech Friday
The Particulars
With its road slate complete, the 55th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team will return home to open its final weekend of the regular season, hosting conference foe No. 52 Virginia Tech on Friday.
About the Hurricanes
Miami (13-10, 2-6 ACC) has been dominant at home all season. Despite facing stiff offerings from some of the nation’s best, including then-No. 50 Rice, then-No. 58 Minnesota and then-No. 63 Georgia Tech, the Hurricanes have managed to post an impressive 10-2 record in home matches this season.
Wilfredo Gonzalez continues to be a force in Miami’s singles lineup. The Guatemala City, Guatemala native has posted a 15-7 dual singles record this season, including a perfect 10-0 mark in home matches.
Junior Gabriel Flores and freshman-standout William Albanese and have also found success this season, playing out of the second and sixth positions, respectively. Both players have recorded 13 dual singles wins this season, which is tied for second best on the team. Diego Soto has faired well for the Hurricanes with a 12-10 dual singles mark, including a 3-1 record when playing out of the second position.
Miami owns a collective 76-59 singles record on the season.
Scouting the Hokies
The 52nd-ranked Hokies have amassed a 12-8 record and a 4-4 record in ACC play this season. Virginia Tech dropped a close 4-3 decision against No. 25 Clemson in its last action. The Hokies have only played five away matches this season and have posted a 1-4 record.
Virginia Tech touts two ranked players in its singles lineup. No. 52 Amerigo Contini and No. 98 Andreas Bjerrehus alternate between the first and second singles positions, combining for a 13-6 record at No. 1 singles and a 13-5 record at No. 2 singles. The two also makeup the Hokie’s top doubles team and have posted a 13-5 record on the season.
Later This Weekend
The Hurricanes will have a quick turnaround before taking the court for its last match of the regular season, facing top-ranked Virginia on Sunday, April 21 at 11 a.m. The match will also serve as senior day for Miami’s only fourth-year player, Victor Mauz.
