Women's Golf in Eighth at SDSU Farms Invite

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – Freshman Christina Ocampo shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for eighth overall as the 54th-ranked Miami Hurricanes are in eighth place Sunday after the first round at The SDSU Farm Invitational.

Miami shot a first-round 21-over 309, just four strokes out of fifth place. No. 1 USC owns a four-stroke lead on the field at 10-over 298, followed by No. 45 UNLV in second place at 14-over 302. No. 25 Texas and No. 31 Pepperdine are tied for third at 15-over 303, while No. 29 Northwestern is in fifth at 17-over 305.

Northwestern’s Hana Lee is the individual leader through 18 holes at 2-under 70, the only golfer under par Sunday.

“A lot of high scores across the board today,” third-year head coach Patti Rizzo. “We’ve been playing tough courses this tournament – tougher than the ones I played in the LPGA.

“But we’re in the middle of the pack, just a few strokes behind and it’s still early. A lot can happen,” Rizzo said.

At 2-over 74, Ocampo is one stroke out of fourth place and four strokes behind Lee. Arizona’s Manon Gidali and USC’s Kyung Kim are tied for second at even-par 72, while four golfers are tied for fourth at 1-over 73.

“The course was playing hard, but I was hitting my driver straight,” Ocampo said. “Doing that kept me out of some trouble today. My short game saved me on a few difficult holes, but it was definitely my putting that kept me going.”

Sophomore Leticia Ras-Anderica, who entered the tournament ranked in the Top 100 for the second consecutive week, is tied for 19th at 4-over 76. Ras-Anderica’s first round showcased back-to-back birdies on holes No. 17 and 18 before making the turn onto the front nine, where she proceeded to par seven of nine holes.

Collecting 14 pars of her own was fellow sophomore Rika Park, who is tied for 40th at 7-over 79. Junior Carina Cuculiza is tied for 46th at 8-over 80, while freshman Laura Hendee is tied for 77th at 16-over 88.

The Miami Hurricanes will be paired with Wyoming and Arizona for the second round, teeing off No. 1 beginning at 11 a.m. ET Monday. Live scoring will be available at
