“We didn’t win any tie breakers today,” head coach Mario Rincon explained.  “That put us in a tough position to come back after losing the doubles point. We need to close out games and sets when we have opportunities.”

Doubles competition was tightly contested, with the Hurricanes and Wolfpack splitting the top two courts.  NC State’s 16th-ranked duo of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber struck first in doubles, downing Miami’s 66th-ranked tandem of Omar Aly and Wilfredo, 8-2.  Miami’s second doubles team of Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto battled to an 8-5 victory over Robbie Mudge and Thomas Weigel on court two, but Miami’s third pair of Henrique Tsukamoto and Marco Stancati dropped an 8-4 final to Beck Bond and Austin Powell, allowing NC State to claim the doubles point.

Miami began singles competition with a pair of straight set wins from the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions.  Marco Stancati evened the match at 1-1 with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Thomas Weigel at fourth singles.

The Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead after Wilfredo Gonzalez downed Dave Thomson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, giving the Guatemala City, Guatemala native his team-leading 14th dual singles win of the season.

Despite stiff challenges from the Hurricanes, NC State pulled out four tough wins to claim the victory, including a pair of three setters.

Gabriel Flores fought hard at No. 2 singles but dropped a 7-6, 6-1 final to Robbie Mudge, allowing the Wolfpack to tie the match at 2-2.

Diego Soto jumped out to a quick 6-1 victory in the first set of his match against Austin Powell, but couldn’t get the ball rolling in the final two frames as Powell downed Soto, 6-1, 6-3, giving the Wolfpack a 3-2 lead.

NC State clinched the victory at sixth singles, as Beck Bond bested William Albanese, 7-6, 6-4.

The final match of the day was on court five.  Senior Victor Mauz dropped the first set, 6-1, to Sean Weber but rallied back to win the second set, 6-4.  The two players exchanged points throughout the third frame, but Weber came out on top with a 7-6 win to give the Wolfpack a 5-2 win.

Coach Rincon is confident his players will bounce back from the tough loss and continue to compete hard for the remainder of the season.

“We have five matches left on our schedule,” Rincon said.  “Our guys know we need to have a strong finish to our season.  Our guys are improving and fighting hard, and we should be able to make a strong push in the last part of our season.”

“We have Boston College next and we are looking forward to playing them in Coral Gables.” – Rincon added.

Miami will host Boston College on Sunday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
