MTennis Continues ACC Road Swing on Friday
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 50th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team will continue its ACC road swing on Friday, March 29, traveling to Winston Salem, N.C., for a match against No. 28 Wake Forest at 4 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Miami (12-6, 1-2 ACC) completed its non-conference slate last week with two victories over then-No. 58 Minnesota, 4-3, and Georgia State, 6-1. Then the Canes traveled to Tallahassee, Fla., for a match against archrival No. 18 Florida State, in which Miami dropped a 5-2 decision.
Despite a loss to the Seminoles, Miami took some positives from the match, particularly in its doubles performance.
Miami’s top duo of Wilfredo Gonzalez and Omar Aly were dominant against the Seminoles’ 22nd -ranked pair of Benjamin Lock and Andres Bocura, winning 8-3. The duo’s convincing win earned them a place among the nation’s top doubles teams, grabbing the No. 66 spot in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll. Meanwhile, Henrique Tsukamoto and Marco Stancati battled to an 8-4 victory over Florida State’s Dominic Cotrone and Blake Davis.
Miami’s second point came when junior Diego Soto grabbed his 10th singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jordan Kelly-Houston on Court 2.
The 28th-ranked Demon Deacons (13-5, 2-1 ACC) enter Friday with two conference wins against ranked opponents, beating No. 44 North Carolina State, 5-2, and No. 74 Georgia Tech, 6-1. Wake Forest has battled 12 top-75 ranked opponents this season, playing to a 7-5 record.
Amogh Prabhakar, the 56th-ranked singles player in country, leads the Demon Deacons’ singles lineup with a 13-4 record on the dual season, followed by Sam Bloom with an 11-3 dual record.
Prabhakar also pairs with David Hopkins to form the No. 70 doubles team in the nation. The duo has a 10-6 mark on the spring season.
Miami and Wake Forest split a pair of matches last year with the latter one going to the Canes in a tough 4-3 victory. In that match, Soto, Tsukamoto and Aly all tallied wins for the Canes before Victor Mauz clinched the match in a decisive court six dual with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 victory over Alex Tsai.
