W Tennis Returns Home to Face Brown, NC State

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 9 University of Miami women’s tennis team looks to continue its winning streak on Wednesday when it welcomes Brown to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 5 p.m.

The Hurricanes will also welcome No. 35 NC State to Coral Gables on Thursday when they return to Atlantic Coast Conference play at noon.

The Canes (10-3) are coming off of a strong road trip to Texas that ended in victories over No. 22 Texas and No. 29 Baylor, 6-1 and 4-3, respectively.

Miami took both doubles points of the weekend without losing a match. The duo of Clementina Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque won each of their matches by a commanding 8-2, while the pair of Kelsey Laurente and Melissa Bolivar went undefeated for the weekend as well. The duo of Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner, ranked 48th in the country, defeated the 19th-ranked team of Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott of Texas, 8-2.

On the singles side, Riobueno, Wagner and Bolivar each won both of their matches. Wagner had no trouble, winning 6-3, 6-4 at Texas and 6-2, 6-2 at Baylor. Riobueno had a tough tiebreak win at Texas and carried that momentum to win handily at Baylor, while Bolivar coasted against the Longhorns and toughed it out for a tiebreak win of her own the next day. Albuquerque contributed to the win against Texas with a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 victory, while Laurente (81) led the way on court one with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Aeriel Ellis (42).

Brown (5-6) is coming off of a 5-2 home win over Maryland on March 21. The Bears narrowly lost the doubles point, as the pair of Misia Krasowski and Hannah Camhi were defeated on court one. A Brown player was injured on court two, forcing a forfeit and conceding the point. The victory came on court three, from the pair of Ammu Mandalap and Nikita Uberoi, a Boca Raton, Fla., native. In singles, Brown’s five victories each came in straight sets. The only loss belonged to Uberoi, but she didn’t go quietly, as the final score was 6-4, 6-7 (6), 11-9.

The Hurricanes last faced Brown on March 30th, 2010, and cruised to a 7-0 victory.

NC State (10-3) most recently hit the court against Duke, suffering a 4-1 defeat. The Wolfpack’s victory came from Christy Sipes’ 6-3, 6-0 singles victory. After beginning the season 9-0, NC State has lost three of its last four matches, including a 4-3 battle to No. 1 UNC.

The last time the Wolfpack and the Hurricanes faced off, Miami won handily, 6-1.
