CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Fresh off a heartbreaking loss to No. 58 Texas Tech, the No. 69 University of Miami men’s tennis team responded with a strong performance as they cruised past New Mexico, 5-2, this afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. The Canes surrendered the doubles point but rallied to win five singles matches to secure the victory. The win today improves Miami’s record to 7-4 on the season.
“I am very proud of our guys,” head coach Mario Rincon said. “They bounced back from a tough loss yesterday, and from losing the doubles point today. We got better this weekend, and we are looking forward to our double header against Georgetown and Florida Gulf Coast next Saturday.”
The Hurricanes fell behind early after surrendering the doubles point to the Lobos. New Mexico’s top duo of Conor Berg and Andrew Van Der Vyver defeated Miami’s Wilfredo Gonzalez and Marco Stacati, 8-5, to get things started. The doubles point was clinched on court three, as UM’s Henrique Tsukamoto and Diego Soto dropped a close 8-6 decision to Mads Hegelund and James Hignett.
In singles, the Hurricanes immediately turned the momentum in their direction with four first-set wins. Omar Aly tied the match at 1-1 for the Hurricanes, as he drubbed Riaan Du Toit, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Wilfedo Gonzalez grabbed the second of four straight set wins for Miami, beating Conor Berg 6-2, 6-2, to give the Canes a 2-1 advantage over the Lobos.
The Hurricanes started to pull away after Gabriel Flores defeated Jadon Phillips, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position, to increase Miami’s lead to 3-1.
Marco Stancati, playing at No. 5 singles, clinched the victory for the Canes. After coasting to a 6-1 win in the first set, Stancati fought tough and outlasted Mitch McDaniels in a tight second set, winning 7-5.
The Hurricanes’ last point came from court one, as Diego Soto edged Samir Iftikhar in a hard-fought three set match, winning 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(9).
The Lobos scored their only singles win from the sixth position after William Albanese dropped a third set tiebreaker to Mads Hegelund, losing 6-2, 6-7, 1-0(8).
The Hurricanes will return to Coral Gables, Fla., for a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 9 against Georgetown at 10 a.m. followed by a match against Florida Gulf Coast at 3 p.m. The Hurricanes are 3-1 at home on the dual season.
