MTennis Defeats USF, 5-2, for Fourth Straight
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A strong doubles performance and four singles wins propelled the No. 54 University of Miami men’s tennis team past No. 55 USF, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the USF Varsity Courts in Tampa, Fla. Today’s win marks the Canes fourth consecutive victory, pushing their record to 6-2 on the spring season.

“Our guys played really well,” head coach Mario Rincon said. “There was a rowdy crowd out there but our guys responded well to the adversity, kept their composure and played at a high level. We are continuing to improve and doing things better and it is really making a difference.”
It was Miami’s second doubles pair of Omar Aly and Gabriel Flores that set the tone for the Canes in the early part of the match, as the junior pair battled to an 8-3 victory over Ravi Patel and Guillermo de Vilchez. With No. 3 doubles falling in their match, it was up to No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point for the Canes, and the duo of Wilfredo Gonzalez and Marco Stancati took care of business. The deciding match was closely contested but the Miami tandem found a way to edge out Oliver Pramming and Ignacio Gonalez-Muniz for an 8-7(6) victory.
“We had some great performances from courts one and two today,” Rincon said. “It felt good to bounce back from our doubles loss last match. “
Reigning ACC Player of the Week, Diego Soto, led the Canes’ successful day at singles play. The Miami junior drubbed his opponent at No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-2, to give the Canes an early 2-0 advantage in the match.
Wilfredo Gonzalez, playing at No. 3 singles, scored the Canes’ third point of the day after his lopsided 6-2, 6-3 victory over Federico Sabogal, pushing the Canes’ lead to 3-0.
Victor Mauz answered the challenge of closing out the match for the Canes. The Miami senior battled hard to a 7-5 win over Ravi Patel in the first set before clinching his match and the Canes’ victory with a 6-4 win in the second frame.
Making his way back into the lineup was Omar Aly, as competed at fourth singles. The Edmond, Okla., native dropped the first set, 4-6, but pushed the match to a third set behind his 6-3 win in the second frame. Aly stayed determined in the third set and defeated Juan Acuna, 6-4, giving the Canes their fifth and final point of the day.
“Omar is a really strong player for us. Rincon explained. “It is good to see him out there competing and playing well. He made some amazing volleys and closed the match in the third set.”
After the big doubles win, Gabriel Flores couldn’t notch a singles win at No. 2 doubles today, losing 6-2, 6-4. The Bulls got their second point from a victory at No. 6 singles, as Guillermo de Vilchez edged out William Albanese in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The Hurricanes will have a two-week break before retuning to the court on Sunday, Feb. 24 for a match against North Florida at 11 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Canes are undefeated at home this season, touting a 3-0 record. North Florida is currently 1-4 on the season.
