Second Round at Hurricane Invite Suspended
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Play at the 2013 Hurricane Invitational was suspended due to darkness Monday with four holes left to play in the second round at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club.
When play was halted, host Miami sat in fourth place at 29-over, trailing leader Texas State (17-over) by 12 strokes. Baylor is four strokes behind Texas State in second place at 21-over, followed by Oklahoma State in third at 28-over. Only three golfers were shooting even-par or better Monday when play stopped. Oklahoma State’s Kelsey Vines leads the field at 3-under, two strokes ahead of Texas State’s Krista Puisite. Campbell’s Teresa Urquizu is third at even-par.
With twilight quickly approaching, play was suspended at 6:15 p.m. ET with the entire field having at least one hole left to play. When the horn sounded, two Miami Hurricanes were in the Top 10. Sophomore Leticia Ras-Anderica is tied for fourth overall at 1-over and was 3-under through 15 when play was stopped.
Prior to play being suspended, sophomore Rika Park had a career-tying low-round of 69 (second time in her career) after the first-round. Park went out and finished the first-round at 3-under par. The round would include three birdies on Deering Bay’s No. 2, No. 9 and No. 12 holes.
“Both Rika [Park] and Leticia [Ras-Anderica] played very well today,” third-year head coach Patti Rizzo said. “Leticia was stripping it all day and Rika was making great putts. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to end the last round, but they’re seasoned enough to pick it back up tomorrow.”
Ras-Anderica ended her first-round at 4-over and was tied for 20th place. However, she turned it around in the afternoon session as Ras-Anderica would sink four birdies on holes No. 7, 8, 9 and 11 before play was suspended.
“The freshmen came in a little overzealous today seeing as how it was their first home tournament,” Rizzo said. “They came in expecting to do well, but now that the pressures off they’ll come in tomorrow and play much better.”
Freshman Laura Hendee carded a first-round 7-over, while fellow freshmen Lauren Riehle and Christina Ocampo each carded 9-over par after 18 holes. Playing as individuals, junior Carina Cuculiza and sophomore transfer Audrey Monssoh recorded first-rounds of 12-over and 17-over, respectively.
