MTennis Defeats UCF in Home Opener
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 60 University of Miami men’s tennis team cruised to a, 6-1, victory in their home opener against UCF at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Today’s win pushes the Hurricanes record to 3-2 on the season.
“I really like the way our guys competed today,” Rincon, said. “Central Florida is a good team and they are well coached. Our guys just took advantage of their opportunities and were able to close sets.”

Miami opened with solid doubles play on all three courts. The duo of Gabriel Flores and Omar Aly earned the first doubles win for the Hurricanes on court two, defeating UCF’s Mario Samson and Francesc Aulina, 8-4. Minutes later, Diego Soto and Henrique Tsukamoto clinched the doubles point for the Canes with an 8-4 victory on court three over Matthew Gladstone and Jorge Blasco.
“I think our doubles are getting much better,” Rincon, said. “Our guys are gaining confidence in doubles play and it showed today. I think we have three solid teams out there who can close a match for us.”
The remaining doubles match on court one was called after the Canes secured the doubles point, but Miami’s Wilfredo Gonzalez and Marco Stancati were leading Juan Bolonia and Amar Hromic, 7-5.
UM took control early in singles, winning the first set on five of six courts. Scoring the first singles point for the Canes was Henrique Tsukomoto, as he dominated Juan Bolonia in a straight sets victory, 6-1, 6-2.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Diego Soto upended UCF’s Jorge Blasco in a hard-fought match that ended in a, 6-3 6-3, victory for the Miami junior.
On court three, Gabriel Flores won the first set against Jose Songroniz, 6-3, before coasting in the second set, winning 6-1. Senior Victor Mauz, playing at No. 4 singles, pulled out a straight sets victory over Matthew Gladstone, winning 7-5, 7-5.
Miami’s final point came from an intense three-set victory from Wilfredo Gonzalez as he outlasted Juan Bolonia, 7-6, 4-6, 10-8.
Fransesc Bolonia won No. 5 singles for UCF, defeating William Albanese, 6-2, 6-2.
The Hurricanes return to action on Sunday, Feb. 3 when they host No. 54 Rice at 11 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Owls are currently 2-2 on the spring season.
Head coach Mario Rincon is looking forward to the challenge the Rice Owls will bring on Sunday.
“Rice brings a really solid team,” Rincon, explained. “Playing them at home will be really exciting for us. It’s going to be a real challenge but whoever is playing better that day will win the match.”
