MTennis Ranked No. 65 by ITA
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team will open its 2013 spring season as the nation’s 65th ranked team, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Hurricanes’ 2013 schedule features 20 matches against teams ranked in the ITA’s preseason rankings, including potentially five matches against teams in the Top 25. The Canes host nine matches against Top 75 teams, including a run of four-straight from March 15-22: No. 60 Clemson, No. 59 Georgia Tech, No. 35 Minnesota and No. 63 Georgia State.
Eight of Miami’s nine Atlantic Coast Conference matches are against ranked teams, including a home match against No. 1 Virginia (April 21) and road meetings with No. 5 Duke (April 14) and No. 18 North Carolina (April 12).
Miami opens the season on Jan. 19 with a double-header in Gainesville against No. 12 Florida at Noon, then Bethune-Cookman at 5 p.m. UM opens the home schedule in early February with three-straight matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. In that span, Miami faces UCF (Feb. 1), followed by No. 55 Rice (Feb. 3) and No. 70 Louisiana-Lafayette (Feb. 8). Check Miami’s schedule on HurricaneSports.com for the complete schedule.
Last season, the Canes finished the year ranked 67th in the nation. The Canes return seven players from last year’s roster and look to make moves nationally this season. Miami touts five upperclassmen, including a lone senior, Victor Mauz. The Canes junior class includes Omar Aly, Gabriel Flores, Diego Soto and Marco Stancati while Wilfredo Gonzalez and Henrique Tsukamoto returns for their second years with UM. Two players – Jack Murphy and William Albanese – will make their first appearances in Miami’s spring season.
