T&F Opens Indoor Season at Kentucky
CORALGABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and fieldprogram will open the new year competing at the two-day Kentucky Invitational Jan.11-12 at E.J. Nutter Field House. It is the first of seven scheduled indoormeets leading up to the NCAA Championships.
“I am really looking forward to competingand seeing where we are,” director of track and field/cross country Amy Deemsaid. “We have a young, hard-working enthusiastic group of student-athletes. Everyoneis excited to get to Kentucky to start the indoor season.”
The men’s and women’s teams will eachcompete in a total of 11 events at the opening meet, including sprints,hurdles, distance, relays, throws and jumps. Field events will open the meetFriday at 5:30 p.m., with a full slate of running events and additional fieldcompetitions Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
Senior All-American Samantha Williams willlead the women in both the long and triple jumps. She finished third in thetriple jump at the ACC Outdoor Championships (12.99m) last season and wasseventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (13.34m). Williams also took part inthe Jamaican Olympic Trials.
The women will be well-represented in thesprints, with three Canes running in both the 60m and the 400m.
On the men’s side, the team also looks for jumpsto be a strength, while expectations are also high for sprints and relays. TheHurricanes will send out two groups in the 4x400m relay, with sophomore PhillipDorsett set to compete in that and the 60m dash in his track debut. Dorsett wasnamed Third-team All-ACC by Phil Steelefor his efforts as a wide receiver for the football team in the fall. Severalathletes from cross country will run distance events for UM this weekend.
Nutter Field House is an $8.5 millionclimate-controlled facility that features a field turf football surface of108,000 square feet, surrounded by a six-lane, 291-meter Mondo track with anine lane 120m sprint straight away. It is a regular host of the SEC indoortrack and field championships.
