Duo of Canes at Lakewood Ranch Classic
SARASOTA, Fla. – University of Miami men’s tennis players Henrique Tsukamoto and Jack Murphy both won their singles consolation round matches on the first day of the 2012 Dick Vitale Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
“Today was a good opportunity for our guys to compete against very strong competition from around the United States and tomorrow will be another important day in their development,” said Mark Dickson, assistant coach at Miami.
Tsukamoto took Joao Souza to three sets, defeating the player from USF in a 12-10 tiebreak, 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (12-10). Murphy downed Robbie Dubuque of Florida in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
“I was proud of how each of the guys bounced back in their singles consolation wins,” said Dickson. “Jack was able to control his opponent early and Henrique had the will to win.”
Both Canes lost their singles main draws in the Round of 32 as Tsukamoto lost in three to Juan Pablo Ramirez (Minnesota), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and Murphy was defeated 6-0, 6-0, by Andre Vidaller of Arizona.
“Our guys fought hard in their singles losses today,” added Dickson. “Jack played his best against a more experienced opponent and Henrique turned his match around, but came up just a bit short.”
In their doubles quarterfinals matchup, the duo lost 8-3, to Billy Federhofer and Gordon Watson of Florida.
Singles consolation play will continue on Saturday morning at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Sarasota.
