Soccer Impresses in Strong Fall Campaign

As the Miami Hurricanes women’ssoccer team wrapped up its 2012 season with an appearance in the Atlantic CoastConference Championship, the team now awaits its NCAA postseason opponent.

“This team had a better regularseason than the 2011 team that hosted and won a first-round NCAA Tournamentgame,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “We have three signature wins this year(compared to only two last year), and had three draws against ranked teams(compared to zero last year).”

  • TheMiami Hurricanes opened their 2012 campaign in impressive fashion, earningexhibition wins over Dayton (4-0) and Ohio State (1-0).
  • Miamienjoyed a 4-1 thrashing of 2012 SEC champions and No. 11 Florida (No. 9 RPI) onthe road at Pressly Stadium in their season opener, a game they thoroughlydominated.
  • TheHurricanes fought their way to a very unfortunate draw with Big 12 championsand 19th-ranked West Virginia (No. 21 RPI) on the road. Miamiregistered 21 shots on the day, outshooting the home side 21-11.
  • Miamifinished its nonconference schedule sporting a 13-3 scoring margin and +10goal differential, while managing a 5-2-1 non-conference record.
  • Theteam’s only nonconference losses were on the road in overtime against No.9 UCF (No. 18 RPI) and against USF, whose only shot on goal foundthe back of the net for a 1-0 decision.
  • TheHurricanes barely missed out on two wins to start their conference schedule, falling 1-0 to No. 7 Wake Forest (No. 10 RPI) and 3-2 to No. 2 Duke (No.14 RPI) in overtime.
  • Both games were very tight, as the homestanding side nearly tallied goals inthe latter stages to win both games. A late chance on a breakaway nearly sealedthe win against Duke, while a shot sailed inches wide against Wake in the finalseconds of regulation.
  • Miamithen reeled off back-to-back ACC wins, including dominant showings over NC Stateand Clemson on the road, to regain footing in the conference standings.
  • Adraw with No. 19 Virginia Tech would start a late surge from theHurricanes. Despite outshooting the Hokies14-7, including a 9-2 differential in the second half, Miami was unable to findthe back of the net in time.
  • Miamientered its match-up with No. 7 Maryland, who was competing for an ACC title atthe time of the contest. A goal from senior midfielder Jordan Roseboro clincheda key decision for the Hurricanes.
  • Miamithen defeated the nation’s No. 1 team for the first in program history. A latetally moved the Hurricanes past in-state rival Florida State to clinch the No. 7 seed in the ACC Championship.
  • For the first time all season, the Seminoles were held scoreless and wereknocked from their national No. 1 ranking, as Miami clinched its first ACCChampionship berth since 2008.
  • Facingthe most difficult portion of its 2012 schedule, Miami reeled off eight ofa possible 12 points to finish the season hot.
  • TheHurricanes held four Top 25 opponents, all of whom ranked in the top seven inthe conference in offense, scoreless across 408 combined minutes to clinch itsberth on the last day of the regular season.
  • Miami’sfiery finish included a 3-1-2 record in its final six regular season games, astretch that included five shutouts.
  • Theteam’s ACC Championship loss to the ninth-ranked Terrapins would serve to continuea common trend: only two of the team’s losses all season had come by more thanone goal, with defeats to No. 9 UCF, No. 7 Wake Forest, No. 2 Dukeand Maryland each by a goal.
  • TheHurricanes set a program single-season record with 11 shutouts, including aprogram ACC-record six shutouts. The 2012 team is on pace to break the school’ssingle-season record for fewest goals allowed and goals against average.

“We allowed way less goals this year and performed farbetter against the best teams in the country,” Anagnost said. “We finishedseventh in the ACC, which is clearly the strongest conference in thecountry.  I also really like how well we played at the end of theseason.  We are all anxious and excited for Monday.”
