Soccer Upsets No. 7 Maryland 1-0 in Overtime

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The University of Miami women’s soccer team used a timely goal from senior Jordan Roseboro eight minutes into overtime to earn a 1-0 decision over No. 7 Maryland Thursday night.

Roseboro’s first goal of the season could not have arrived at a better time. Her open net tally came on an overtime scramble in the box after a free kick taken by sophomore keeper Emily Lillard. The ball snuck past Maryland keeper Rachelle Beanlands, and Roseboro finished with confidence to guide her team into celebration.

“First I want to give credit to Maryland. They are an excellent team,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “It was a pretty ugly game, our kids competed very hard, and I am very proud of them for that.”

Miami, which fought its way through one of the chippiest match-ups of the season, improved to 8-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the win. Lillard improved her personal mark to 6-6-2.

It was Miami’s second straight decision over a ranked Terrapins squad; Miami defeated then-No. 16 Maryland 2-1 nearly a year ago to the day on Oct. 18, 2011. The Hurricanes’ victory marked only the second conference loss and fourth defeat of the season for the No. 7 Terps.

Miami recorded 11 shots overall, four shots on goal and two corner kick opportunities in the contest. The Canes were paced offensively by junior Tara Schwitter and freshman Ally Andreini, who each recorded three shots.

Playing without some of his most important contributors, Coach Anagnost saw his team claw its way to victory in one of the more intense matches of the fall.

“We received great contributions from everyone,” Anagnost added. “I felt we were very focused and resilient. Finding a way to win in that situation is incredible and is a huge testament to our team.”

The Hurricanes will look to maintain positive momentum with another strong showing on the road Sunday in its trip to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for a showdown with No. 24 Boston College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
