Laurente Upsets Eighth-Seeded Alexis King

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. – Miami freshman Kelsey Laurente turned heads Wednesday at the Amelia Island Championships when she upset No. 8 seed Alexis King at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation.

King, ranked 566th in the world, was the only seeded player to lose on the day.

Assistant women’s tennis coach Alex Santos said of Laurente’s 6-3, 6-4 victory, “Kelsey played a complete match against a very tough and experienced player.

“We are happy to see that she is trusting and implementing our vision of her game.”

On Thursday morning, the Miramar, Fla., native will face the Netherlands’ Alexandra Poorta, who in her Wednesday match defeated Johnnise Renaud, 6-1, 6-3.

Santos also said of Laurente, “On a daily basis, she has been able to keep adding up the little details on our notebook. Today she was aggressive, competed like we’re supposed to at Miami and did it all with great emotional control.”

Matches start Thursday at 10 a.m., and Laurente is scheduled to be the third match on the main court.
