Canes Wrap Up Second Day of Fab-Four Invite
CARY, N.C. – Daytwo of the Duke Fab-Four Invitational is complete and Miami’s Kelsey Laurente,Melissa Bolivar and Lina Lineikite each earned the right to play in the event’sfinal day on Sunday.
“I believe it wasanother very positive day for Miami tennis,” assistant coach Alex Santos said.
Even though shefell to Duke’s 44th-ranked Mary Clayton in three sets in the Bluebracket quarterfinals, Laurente battled back and defeated 113th-rankedErin Stephens of Ole Miss, 7-5, 6-4.
In the Whitebracket, Lineikite had a similar result. The sophomore fell in three sets toYale’s Madeleine Hamilton before she took down Duke’s 21st-ranked MarianneJodoin in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-2.
“In singles, Iliked the positive mental and physical response given by both Lina and Kelsey,”Santos added. “They were able to beat some of the best players in the country.”
Lineikite andLaurente, along with Bolivar, will each play at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
“In my opinion, tomorrowis the most important day of the tournament,” Santos said. “The goal is tosimply elevate our level of tennis.”
Bolivar andLineikite fell, 8-4, to the 22nd-ranked tandem of CristinaSanchez-Quintanar and Cristina Stancu, ending their tournament.
“In doubles, weneed to keep working on becoming more aggressive and taking advantage of our opportunitiesearlier in the match,” Santos said.
Laurente alsocompeted in doubles, teaming up with Texas’ Annat Rabinovich to secure a thirdplace finish in the consolation bracket of the Black bracket.
