Canes Notch Top Performances at Wolfpack Last Chance Meet

RALEIGH, N.C.–On a dreary day in North Carolina’s capitol city, members of the University of Miami track & field team posted quality performances at the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier at Paul Derr Track. The meet marked the final day of regular-season competition prior to the NCAA Regionals.
The Canes won seven events, set new personal bests and saw sophomore Lindsi Arrington move into third on UM’s all-time 1500 meters list.
Arrington finished fifth in the 1500 meters in a time of 4:30.10 to record a new personal best and third-best performance in Miami annals. Thandi Stewart ran a personal best, finishing second in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 56.70. The sophomore was the first collegiate to cross the line, following Olympic hopeful and former Cane Ti’erra Brown (55.57).
Winning their events on the track for the women were Tarika Williams in the 100 meters with a time of 11.54 and Nicole Cummings in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.77. Senior Ashley Holmes was the top performer in the field events, winning the hammer throw with a toss of 54.50 meters (178-10).
Other top performers for the women include Jokira Jiles with a third-place finish in the 200 meters (24.80), freshman Amber Monroe with a toss of 50.76 (166’06) in the discus for third and Cummings and Samantha Wiliams went third and fourth in the long jump with marks of 5.84 (19’2) and 5.81 (19’0.75), respectively.
On the men’s side, senior All-American hurdler Devon Hill crossed the line in 13.71 to win the 110-meter hurdles and show that he is poised for the NCAA Regional competition. Freshman Christian Cook finished third in the 110mH with a personal best time of 14.26.
Sophomore Bassim El-Sabawi ran a 22.09 to win the 200 meters after finishing third in the 100 meters with a time of 10.75. Freshman Innocent Jacob won the long jump, leaping 7.07 meters (23’2.50) while teammate Jason Johnson went 6.98 meters (22’11) to finish third.
The meet wraps up the Canes’ 2012 regular season. Regional qualifiers will be declared and announced later this week. The NCAA Regionals will be held in Jacksonville, Fla. May 24-26.
