Canes Set to Compete at 118th Penn Relays

April 25, 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams will travel to the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field this weekend to take part in the 118th running of the Penn Relays, the longest-running track meet in the United States. Last year, the meet’s three-day attendance total was 110,087, marking the eighth straight year and the 11th time in the last 12 years in which that mark surpassed 100,000 spectators.

Leading the charge for the Canes will be seniors Devon Hill, Tarika Williams and Ashley Holmes. Hill is gunning for another big victory in the 110-meter hurdles in his already impressive final season after capturing another ACC Championship this past weekend in a school, meet and conference record 13.35 seconds. His event will go off Friday at 3:40 p.m. Williams will line up in the 100-meters on Friday at 3:30 p.m. looking to keep her momentum going after her two All-ACC performances in Charlottesville. Holmes will be very busy in Philadelphia, as she will be participating in the shot put, discus and hammer throws. Her first event will be the hammer throw at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Also representing the Canes in the individual events will be junior Samantha Williams in the triple jump, whose huge 12.99 meter personal-best this past weekend earned the first All-ACC accolade of her career. Sophomore Nicole Cummings and freshman Innocent Jacob will compete in the long jump, and freshman Amber Monroe will join Holmes in the discus throw.

Miami will also field five relay teams this weekend, led by the men’s and women’s 4×100-meter relays, which both medaled at the ACC Championships. Seniors Jason Johnson and Hill along with sophomore Bassim El-Sabawi and freshman Christian Cook will comprise the men’s team, while senior Tarika Williams, sophomores Nicole Cummings and Alyssa McClure, and freshman Jokira Jiles make up the women’s team. Both the men and women will also field a sprint medley relay, which consists of two 200-meter legs, a 400-meter leg and an 800-meter leg. The men will feature the team of El-Sabawi, Cook, Hill and senior Brian Laskowski, while the women will run with Williams, Jiles, sophomore Thandi Stewart and freshman Shannon Wright. The Canes’ final relay will be the men’s distance medley relay, consisting of a 1200-meter leg, a 400-meter leg, an 800-meter leg and a 1600-meter leg. Running in this relay will be sophomore Connor Adams, senior Austin Rector and juniors Sean Petty and Gregory Kaczka.
