CARY, N.C. – The No. 69 University of Miami men’s tennis team ended the 2012 spring season with a 4-0 loss to No. 32 Florida State Thursday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park in North Carolina.

“FSU was too strong in some spots today,” said Coach Mario Rincon. “Wilfredo and Diego were up a set on courts 3 and 4, and Omar was playing a solid match at No. 2, when the final matches were stopped.”

In doubles play, juniors Victor Mauz and Mark Schanerman were defeated by Anderson Reed and Dominic Coltrane 8-4 in the No. 3 position while Wilfredo Gonzalez and Henrique Tsukamoto lost, 8-6, to nationally-ranked No. 60 Jordan Kelly-Houston and Blake Davis in the No. 1 spot to concede the doubles point.

In the No. 2 position, Gabriel Flores and Marco Stancati led Benjamin Lock and Andres Bucaro, 6-5, but did not finish the match after the team surrendered the doubles point.

Flores, Schanerman and Stancati each lost in straight sets in the 1, 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Flores fell to Kelly-Houston, 6-3, 6-1 to put FSU up 2-0 in the overall match. Stancati then was defeated, 6-2, 6-3, by Jason Zafiros and Schanerman fell 6-0, 6-4 to Cristian Gonzales-Mendez to give the Seminoles the 4-0 victory.

Three singles matches were not completed between the Canes and Seminoles. At No. 2, Omar Aly was down 6-5, 1-0 to Blake Davis, but Wilfredo Gonzalez and Diego Soto each led their opponent 6-4, 2-3 before the match was called.

“We have a young, coachable team that loves to work hard,” added Rincon. “They will only get better in singles and doubles over the summer and into next year.”

Miami ends the season 8-13 overall and 1-9 in the ACC, but has high hopes for the 2012-13 campaign as all eight players, including five underclassmen, will return to the roster for next season.
