Adams and Jacob set UM Records in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.–The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams finished competition at the Birmingham Invitational in style, leaving with a pair of school records, four victories and numerous seasonal bests and top-five finishes.

Leading the way were sophomore Connor Adams and freshman Innocent Jacob, who set UM records in the One Mile and High Jump respectively. Adams finished second out of twenty competitors, crossing the line in 4:13.37, bettering the previous school record of 4:14.06. Senior Matt Wilson and Sophomore Luke Fontaine finished fifth and eighth respectively, in times of 4:21.85 and 4:24.92. Jacob earned his first collegiate victory by besting the field with his school record of 2.08m/6’9.75″, and capped off his day with two top-five finishes after placing fourth in the long jump with a collegiate best of 6.98m/22’11”.

“Connor [Adams] in the one-mile and Innocent [Jacob] in the high jump led the way for our team today, both setting school records. said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “I really like the aggressiveness of our freshmen today.”

The team of Devon Hill, Darrell Butler, Christian Cook, and Brian Laskowski provided the Hurricanes’ other victory of the meet in taking the 4×400 relay with a season-best time of 3:18.39. The women finished second in their 4×400 relay with a time 3:49.57.

Senior Ashley Holmes took the women’s weight throw with a season-best throw of 17.81m/58’5.25″. She brought home another top-five finish by placing third in the shot put with a throw of 13.61m/44’8″.

Tarika Williams continued her impressive senior campaign with a victory in the women’s 200 meters with a time of 23.94 seconds. She also added a second-place finish in the 60m with a time of 7.36.

Senior All-American Hill equaled his season best in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing as the top collegian and second overall in a time of 7.80 seconds. Freshman Christian Cook ran a new personal best of 8.26 seconds, finishing eighth overall.

Laskowski made his senior season debut finishing third in the 800 meters in a time of 1:54.75. Other top-5 finishes include: Tameka Jameson and Shannon Wright in the 400 meters (2nd and 4th), Taniesha Cordell in the 800 (4th), Lindsi Arrington in the One Mile (4th), Rachel Dupree in the 60m Hurdles (5th), Jokira Jiles in the 200 meters (4th) and Miranda Wilson in the Weight Throw (4th).

“We had a good outing today, but we will need to continue to improve as a team if we want to be dominant at the ACC Championships.” commented Deem.

The Canes are back in action next week as they travel to the Virginia Tech Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. on Feb. 3-4.
