Jacob Leads Canes at Kentucky Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky.–Freshman jumper Innocent Jacob finished fourth in both the high and long jumps to pace the Hurricanes during opening day of competition at the Kentucky Invitational. UM opened its 2012 indoor season tonight at Nutter Fieldhouse.

Jacob, making his collegiate debut, cleared six feet, six and one quarter inches on his third attempt to finish fourth in the high jump. The Wood River Junction, R.I. native jumped 22 feet, eight and one-half inches in the long jump for his second fourth-place finish of the meet. Teammate Jason Johnson finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, one and three quarter inches.

In the only event on the track tonight, the UM men’s 4×800 meter relay team of Austin Rector, Connor Adams, Luke Fountaine and Matthew Wilson finished third in the event. The relay team finished with a time of 7:55.98, behind an unattached quartet (7:39.13) and Kentucky (7:41.68).
 
On the women’s side, senior Ashley Holmes finished the night with the Canes’ best performance, throwing the weight 56 feet, three inches to place fourth in the weight throw. Senior Miranda Wilson placed sixth in the event after a throw of 53 feet, nine inches. Sophomore jumper Nicole Cummings recorded a long jump of 18 feet, eight inches for a seventh-place finish.

Saturday will be a busy day for the Canes as action at the Kentucky Invitational continues starting at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s high jump. The women’s 60-meter hurdle semifinals is the first event on the track at 12:30 p.m.
