Miami Swimming & Diving Returns Home for Friday Matinee

Nov. 3, 2011

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming & diving team returns home to the Norman A. Whitten University Center Pool on Friday, Nov. 4 for a Friday matinee dual meet with Indian River State College at 2 p.m. The event is free, and all are invited to attend.

For the first time since Oct. 1, the Hurricanes will enjoy a home meet after three consecutive events on the road in Gainesville [Fla.] and Houston, respectively. During that span, several Hurricanes recorded top performances to bolster themselves out to the top of the record sheets on the campaign.

Friday’s dual meet will feature a 13-event format with 100-yard lengths of stroke races. The 1- and 3-meter springboard diving events will take place at the same time as the swimming races are being held adjacent to the lanes. UMiami veteran head coach Randy Ableman will be in charge of what has already been an exciting group to watch this year for the Hurricanes.

The diving team is led by Lindsay Lester, Thea Vock and Kara McCormack, as well as male diver Sam Dorman.

Meanwhile, in the swimming lanes, it’ll be swimming head coach Christie Shefchunas controlling the sides as she helps coach her team to victory Friday.

Senior Kelsi Hall continues to be the leader for the Hurricanes in the 50-yard freestyle, turning in four of the top five performances on the year. Hall is already the school record-holder from a season ago in the 50 free, and has a season-best time of 22.94 from the opening meet of the year at home against Florida Gulf Coast and Florida State. Behind her in the 50 free is junior transfer Celeste Degen with the next seven best performances on the campaign, including a PR time of 24.02 at the All Florida Invite.

Freshman Lucy Worrall is the top speedster for the Canes in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. She is followed by junior Christine Anderson who holds the top three marks in the 500 free event.

It’s Hannah Kling, Roxanne Meyer and Whitney Stephenson in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, while defending Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion junior Sofia Johansson holds the top honors for UMiami in the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Dana Hatic has the top time in the 200 breast.

Once again, Worrall is putting up the team’s best times in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, as teammate Kling holds four of the top five marks in the 200 individual medley, followed by Anderson. Anderson, a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., also holds the top two spots for the Canes in the 400 IM.
