Miami Volleyball Looks Strong in Annual Alumni Match

Coral Gables, Fla. – The 2011 University of Miami Hurricanes volleyball team took down the Alumni Team, 5-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-9, 25-20, 15-7) on Saturday afternoon inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex.
UM senior outside hitter Lane Carico registered 19 kills and 14 digs to lead the 2011 squad. The Manhattan Beach, Calif. native led all performers with a .613 hitting percentage on the afternoon, adding a block assist and match-high seven service aces in four sets.
Sophomore right side Alex Johnson and freshman middle blocker Alexis Mourning each tallied 12 kills in assisting the Hurricanes to the win. Johnson claimed the second of two double-doubles for the 2011 Canes with 17 digs to go along with her kills total. She also notched six assists.
Also reaching double digits in kills was redshirt freshman middle blocker Emani Sims. After sitting out last season, the Glenview, Ill. native collected 11 kills for a team second-best .526 hitting percentage, adding a block assist and a dig.
As a squad, the Canes hit .667 for the match with seven total team blocks (one solo / 12 assisted). The Alumni hit just .083 and recorded four team blocks (three solo / two assisted).
Sophomore libero Ryan Shaffer led all players with a match-high 24 digs.
Leading the Alumni was Lici McGee with 10 kills and seven digs. Behind her was current Miami assistant coach Ashley Woods with eight kills and six digs. Francheska Savage added six kills and eight digs.
The University of Miami begins the season on Friday, August 26, at the Tiger Classic hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge, La. The Hurricanes will face Jacksonville State in the season-opener at 4:30 p.m. (EST). On Saturday, UM takes on Louisiana-Lafayette at 1:30 p.m., followed by host LSU at 7 p.m.
