CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Head men’s tennis coach Mario Rincon has announced the signing of Wilfredo Gonzalez to a National Letter of Intent to play men’s tennis for the University of Miami.

A 6-1, right-handed player from Guatemala – who began playing tennis at age six, Gonzalez is currently ranked No. 86 among junior players in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) rankings. He was previously ranked as high as No. 61 in the world this year, posting a 9-7 mark in seven tournaments.

“Wilfredo is a talented player with a powerful all-around game,” said Rincon. “He’s a great competitor, and will be able to challenge the best players in the ACC. Additionally, he’s a solid doubles player, and we are looking forward to having him in Coral Gables.”

After a first-round bye, Gonzalez won four matches in straight sets to advance to the finals of February’s Condor de Plata Tournament in La Paz, Bolivia. Two weeks later, he made the quarterfinals at the Argentina Cup in Mar Del Plata. He also played in two futures tournaments this year – in El Salvador and his native Guatemala.

In 2010, Gonzalez won both the Monterrey Contry ITF Junior Cup in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Tampico Junior Cup in Tampico, Mexico, en route to a 29-13 record that year. He also reached the finals of the Copa Cristal (El Salvador) and the semifinals of the Copa Cariari (Costa Rica).
