BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior hurdlers Ti’erra Brown and Takecia Jameson ran the fastest two times of the qualifying heats in the 400m hurdles in the first of three days of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on Thursday.

Brown, already a five-time All-America honoree and national runner up in both the 400 and 100m hurdles a year ago, circled the track in 56.39 seconds – the second fastest time of the season for the Hampton, Va. native.

“Ti’erra ran a clean race,” said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “She and Takecia both have put themselves in a strong position for tomorrow’s quarterfinals.”

Jameson was right behind her classmate, registering the fastest time of her season by nearly seven-tenths of a second at 57.49. The duo will compete in the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles tomorrow at 7 p.m. Three women from each of the three quarterfinal heats plus the next three fastest times will advance to the NCAA National Championships in June.

“Takecia ran a strong and confident race today,” said Deem. “We have seen some very good things from her in practice and its great to see her put it together in the first round.”

Brown and Jameson will also be competing in the 100m hurdle qualifying round tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. To move on the Saturday’s quarterfinal in the event, each hurdler must finish in the top three in one of the six heats or be among the next six fastest times.

For the men, junior Devon Hill will race in the 110m hurdle qualifier, which is set to start at 5 p.m. In April, Hill won the ACC Championship in the event and has a season-best time of 13.65 seconds.

Earlier on Friday, senior Megan Novinger will be competing in the high jump at 1 p.m. The Miami native reached a season-best mark of 1.75m (5-08.75) at the Hurricane Invitational. The top 12 jumpers advance to Des Moines, Iowa.

Also competing in the Preliminary Round’s first day was freshman Nicole Cummings, who reached a mark of 5.68m (18-07.75) in the long jump. The NCAA experience for the Peekskill, N.Y. native will be invaluable to the Canes next season.
