No. 25 Miami Men's Tennis falls to Georgia Tech in ACC Quarters
April 22, 2011
Raleigh, N.C.–The No. 25 University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to No. 17 Georgia Tech, 4-0 in ACC championships quarterfinal action on Friday. The No. 4-seeded Hurricanes (14-7) stayed close in all three doubles matches, but the Yellow Jackets took No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the doubles point. “We had opportunities to win the doubles point,” head coach Mario Rincon said. “I thought we adjusted to indoors fairly well. Our guys fought hard today, and I’m proud of their effort and how we played during our conference season.” Miami grabbed a point at No. 3 singles as Carl Sundberg defeated Eliot Potvin, 6-3, 7-6. “Carl had another solid win today,” Rincon said. “He is really difficult to pass at the net because of his reach and agility as well as his ability to jump for overheads.” However, it was not enough as Georgia Tech collected points at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 singles to claim the victory. The match was played in Raleigh at NC State’s indoor facility due to heavy morning rain in Cary at the outdoor Cary Tennis Park. In the earlier meeting between the schools on March 13, the match came down to the final match in a 4-3 Miami win. However, playing on fewer courts because of the rain, not all singles matches were on court at the same time, preventing the same suspense from recurring. Next up for the Hurricanes will be the NCAA Championships, with the sites of the first and second round still to be determined.
