Top-Ranked Virginia Hands Miami First ACC Loss
March 25, 2011
CORAL GABLES, FLA. – The29th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped its first Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season, falling to top-ranked Virginia, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Cavaliers (19-0, 4-0) remain undefeated this season by winning their 19th straight, handing the Hurricanes (9-5, 3-1) just their third home loss of the season in eight matches.
Virginia took control from the start, taking the 1-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches – including the 8-4 decision at No. 1 by the Cavaliers’ third-ranked duo of Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney.
Virginia – who has a ranked player in all six singles positions -won each of its singles matches in straight sets, including a 7-5, 6-1 win by No. 109 Julen Uriguen at the No. 6 position, snapping a seven-match win streak by Miami freshman Gabriel Flores.
“Virginia is awfully good and they were ready to play,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “We didn’t do well in doubles and that carried over to singles play. We got off to a slow start and the match got away from us early, but there’s a reason why they’re No. 1 in the country. Now we need to focus on Virginia Tech on Sunday.”
The Hokies (10-5, 2-1) and Hurricanes meet on Sun., March 27, at Noon. Admission is free to all regular-season matches.
