Miami Student-Athletes Enjoy Record Semester in the Classroom

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami student-athletes recorded a collective grade point average (GPA) of 2.94 for the 2010 fall semester, setting a new record for the highest GPA for a semester in school history.

Fourteen of Miami’s 17 sports turned in a semester GPA of 3.00 or better, with men’s cross country leading all sports with a 3.57 team GPA. Eight UM teams – Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Diving, Volleyball, Soccer, Men’s Indoor Track, Men’s Outdoor Track and Women’s Tennis – turned in a GPA of at least 3.30.

The performances by the student-athletes in the classroom during the fall semester also brought the athletic department’s cumulative GPA up to 2.90, tying the program’s best mark all-time.

Individually, 14 student-athletes maintained a perfect 4.00 GPA, while 140 earned Athletic Director Honor Roll recognition for having a 3.20 GPA or better.

Several sports achieved team-best numbers in the fall. The baseball team posted its highest mark in program history (2.90), while the men’s basketball team posted its highest GPA for a fall semester (2.85).
Overall, UM women carried a semester GPA of 3.14 and a cumulative GPA of 3.16, while the men had a 2.74 fall GPA to bring their cumulative average to 2.65.

The 14 student-athletes with a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall were Corey Janson (Baseball), Adrian Thomas (Men’s Basketball), Christian Blocker (Men’s Tennis), Carina Cuculiza (Golf), Sarah Medland (Rowing), Adriana Morell-Pacheco (Rowing), Theresa Recicar (Rowing), Nicole Chandler (Soccer), Alexis Fee (Swimming), Lauren Jacoby (Swimming), Brittany Viola (Diving), Emma Steppe (Women’s Cross Country), Mariel Scholfield (Volleyball) and Nrithya Sundararaman (Volleyball).

In total, 183 UM student-athletes earned at least a 3.00 GPA in the fall.
