CORAL GABLES, Fla. –The 38th-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team swept visiting Troy, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the UM campus.

“Today we faced a good team,” said Gabriel Flores, who picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6. “We all did what we had to do, and getting that 7-0 win today gives us confidence and gets us going in the right direction for our next match.”

Playing alongside the Hurricanes’10th-ranked women’s squad, the Miami men (3-2) came out strong in singles play, cruising to straight-sets victories in all six positions over the No. 65 Trojans (0-6).

Waylon Chin nearly blanked his opponent at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1, 6-1, to improve to 7-9 in singles action. Christian Blöcker improved to 4-1 at the No. 2 position and evened his overall record at 7-7 with the 6-3, 7-5 victory.

Miami carried its momentum into doubles play, which it untraditionally played following singles competition on Friday. The Hurricanes won two of three doubles matches, with Omar Aly pairing with All-American Carl Sundberg for his first win at No. 2, defeating Troy’s duo, 8-2. Chin and Pedro Ast also picked up a doubles victory for the `Canes, 8-3, at No. 3.

“We had a good day today,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “Our guys were focused and we came out with a lot of energy in the singles. We could have had all the doubles, but it got away from us at No. 1 a little bit there in the end. But I thought our doubles looked a lot better. I was really happy for Omar to get his first win at the No. 2 position in his first college doubles match with Carl. Overall it was a really good day for us, and this should give us momentum going into Sunday versus Kentucky.”

“I think it was a tough day to play with the conditions, but I think everybody hung in there and did their best,” added Blöcker. “I think we’re all competing very well, and if we keep doing that we’re going to continue winning matches.”

The Hurricanes hit the road to face No. 12 Kentucky – Rincon’s alma mater – on Sun., Feb. 13, at Noon.
