`Canes Move Up to 10th In Latest Women's ITA Rankings
Feb. 3, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team moved up one spot to No. 10 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings released Thursday. The Hurricanes, who have opened the season 3-0, are coming off a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents last week.
Miami has now climbed two spots in the poll since the initial spring rankings were released on Jan. 4. Last week, the Hurricanes won the ITA Kick-Off Weekend to advance into the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, scheduled for Feb. 18-21 in Charlottesville, Va.
Miami’s climb in the rankings comes after wins over No. 54 FIU and No. 21 Arizona State during the Kick-Off Weekend. All-America senior Bianca Eichkorn, currently ranked 16th in singles play by the ITA, led the charge for the `Canes, going 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles alongside Anna Bartenstein.
Freshmen Melissa Bolivar and Brittany Dubins, both of whom are seeing their first collegiate action this spring, are also off to a fast start this year with a combined 6-0 singles mark.
Miami is one of four ACC teams ranked in the Top 10 and one of six in the Top 20. Stanford, Florida, Baylor, UCLA and North Carolina sit claim the top five spots, while Duke, Michigan, California, Clemson and Miami round out the Top 10.
Prior to heading to the national indoor event in a few weeks, the `Canes will host a pair of dual matches next weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, with FIU visiting on Feb. 11 and Florida State on Feb. 13.
