CORAL GABLES, FLA. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team jumped out to the 5-0 lead and went on to defeat North Florida, 5-2, in its dual match opener at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

The Hurricanes (1-0), swept doubles play and won four consecutive singles matches in straight sets to guarantee the victory, handing the Ospreys (0-1) the loss.

Miami freshman Gabriel Flores (7-7) clinched the match with the 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Beauregard Treyz.

“We are definitely very happy to get our first win of the season under our belts. North Florida is a very competitive team and well coached,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “this gave us a great opportunity to watch some of the new guys compete and play as Miami Hurricnaes. They did a good job and everybody played hard and played with a lot of pride. But we can still do better — there are mnay things we can improve on our team.

“We need to get ready for our next two matches against FAU and Rice. We’re very much looking forward to our season. We have a lot of depth this year and many players that are capable of performing well for our team. We’re fired up.”
