Coral Gables, Fla. – After a month away from the water, the University of Miami swimming and diving team is back in action on Sat., Jan. 15, taking on local opponent FIU and Central Connecticut State in a tri-meet at the Bay Vista Aquatics Complex in Miami, Fla. FIU will serve as host for the event.

For the second time this season, the University of Miami (5-1) is taking on FIU in swimming and diving. This will be the first time CCSU is facing the Hurricanes, but the third time the two schools have met in as many years. This is the first time Miami and CCSU will meet away from the Norman A. Whitten University Center Pool, with the `Canes claiming wins in 2009 and 2010, respectively, over the Blue Devils in Coral Gables.

In the last meeting between FIU and UM back on Oct. 15, 2010, the Hurricanes prevailed over the Golden Panthers, 188-54, in Coral Gables. In that meet, UM collected wins in 11-of-14 events. Miami was led by a host of swimmers, including junior transfer Kelsi Hall (Yorktown, Ind.) with a time of 23.13 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.

Joining Hall with wins on the afternoon was fellow junior transfer Whitney Stephenson (Grass Valley, Calif.) in the 200 freestyle; Christine Anderson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the 1000 freestyle; Sofia Johansson (Ramlösa, Sweden) in the 100 breaststroke; and senior Deidre Novotny (Palm Harbor, Fla.) in the 200 individual medley.

The divers for the Hurricanes registered sweeps against the Panthers, led by freshman Thea Vock (Clermont, Fla.) on the 1-meter springboard with 315 points. Junior transfer Carrie Dragland (Woodinville, Wash.) followed on the 1-meter board with 310.65 points.

For the Hurricanes, Saturday’s meet will serve as the first action since Dec. 4, when Miami took down Vanderbilt by a score of 180-82, in Coral Gables. The diving team was in action that same weekend, participating in the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas. The `Canes divers performed well, including top three performances from Dragland, Vock and male diver Samuel Dorman (Tempe, Ariz.).

Head swimming coach Christie Shefchunas and diving coach Randy Ableman have been working with their student-athletes over the winter break, and both are excited to see what results will come from the competition layoff, as well as extended time for practice.

Complete results and a recap of Saturday’s meet will be posted to HurricaneSports.com. The final dual meet for the Hurricanes on the year will take place on Fri., Jan. 21, as UM takes on Florida Atlantic for Senior Appreciation Day at the Norman A. Whitten University Center Pool at 3 p.m.
