CORAL GABLES, FLA. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team opens dual-match play versus North Florida on Sun., Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. on campus at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes, ranked No. 44 in the first Campbell/ITA Rankings of the season, will host three-straight home matches over the next week – following Sunday’s opener with contests versus FAU (Thurs., Jan. 20, 6 p.m.) and No. 30 Rice (Sat., Jan. 22, 1 p.m.).

Miami posted an 11-11 record in 2010, winning five of its last six matches – with three wins over ranked squads during that season-ending run, including a 4-3 victory over No. 14 Duke. UM returns five players from that squad, including All-American Carl Sundberg and Christian Blöcker, who both saw time at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions last season.

The returners are also buoyed by the nation’s seventh-ranked recruiting class, including true freshmen Gabriel Flores and Omar Aly, in addition to transfer Eduardo Pavia, who had a strong fall season for the Hurricanes.

North Florida finished 19-8 in 2010 with a 7-3 mark in the Atlantic Sun. The Ospreys return five players from that team, including 2010 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year Daniel Sotomarino.

“We are excited to start our season at home against UNF,” said seventh-year head coach Mario Rincon. “We have a deep and talented team, which will really give us a lot of flexibility throughout the year in singles and doubles. Our team is healthy and in good shape, ready to accomplish big goals for the University of Miami tennis program.”

After opening the season with the three-match homestand, Miami will hit the road for a pair of matches at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Texas A&M from Jan. 29-30. The Hurricanes will play 11 home matches during the spring – including six versus ACC opponents and eight against squads ranked in the first poll – and at least 10 regular-season matches on the road.

Admission to all regular-season matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center is free.
