Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team is set for its second invitational meet of the young season set at the Georgia Tech Invitational to run Fri., Nov. 19 through Sun., Nov. 21 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

The Hurricanes have not hit the water for competition since Nov. 6 at the University of Houston in Texas. UM is coming off back-to-back wins in the city of Houston, taking down Rice (W, 152-114) and the University of Houston (W, 139-103). Miami is 4-1 on the season, and has won seven of its last eight head-to-head meetings dating back to last season.

In their last events in Houston, the Hurricanes set nine pool records at Rice (Nov. 5). The records came in the 50 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay.

Earlier this season, Miami took part in the All Florida Invitational at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Miami had its highest tournament finish since 2008 in that meet, taking third place overall on the weekend.

Junior transfer Kelsi Hall (Yorktown, Ind.) is Miami’s leader in the 50 freestyle, holding the top four times on the season for the `Canes. Senior Annika Saarnak (Pühalepa, Estonia) is ranked in the top five of the 50- and 100 freestyle – holding all five top performances in the 100 free. Junior transfer Whitney Stephenson (Grass Valley, Calif.) has the top four marks in the 200 freestyle, in addition to the top performances in the 100- and 200 backstroke.

Sophomore Sofia Johansson (Ramlösa, Sweden) will lead the Hurricanes in the breaststroke events, as she leads the team in the 100- and 200 breast.

Saarnak and junior Erin Simpson (Lookout Mountain, Tenn.) are the top performers for UM in the butterfly, as Saarnak leads the 100 and Simpson in the 200.

The last time UM went to the Georgia Tech Invite was in 2008, as the `Canes won three of the four team head-to-head competitions, defeating Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern and New Orleans, respectively. In that meet, the win against Georgia Tech was Shefchunas’ first against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.

Upon returning from the Georgia Tech Invite, Miami will take a week off for the holidays and continue training before traveling to the Texas Invitational being host by the University of Texas in Austin. The event will take place on Thurs., Dec. 2, and continue through Sat., Dec. 4.
