Pavia Leads Hurricanes on Classic's Opening Day

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLA. – Senior Eduardo Pavia of the University of Miami men’s tennis team went 2-0 in singles competition and 1-0 in doubles to start strong on day one of the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic on Friday.

 

Pavia rallied in Friday’s first round to defeat Florida’s Michael Alford, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 and then used straight sets to knock off Arizona’s 107th-ranked Jason Zafiros, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round. The Ball State transfer, playing in his first season with the Hurricanes, also paired with fellow senior Waylon Chin to earn a doubles win by default.

 

Chin and freshman Gabriel Flores were also successful in the first round of singles competition, as Chin bounced back from a first-set defeat, to take down Florida’s Andrew Butz, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2. Flores won in straight sets, beating Minnesota’s Julian Dehn, 6-4, 6-4. Flores then fell in the second round to UF”s 105th ranked Bob Van Overbeek, 6-4, 6-1.

 

In their final tournament of the fall, the Hurricanes are joined in a strong field by Pepperdine, Florida, Minnesota, Arizona, Alabama, Temple and Ole Miss.

 

The Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic starts back up on Sat., Nov. 13, at 9 a.m. and runs through Sun., Nov. 14.
