Eichkorn To Play for Championship at Clay Court Classic

BRADENTON, Fla. – University of Miami senior Bianca Eichkorn advanced into the championship match of the 2010 Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic after recording a pair of singles victories on Saturday.

Eichkorn – ranked 14th nationally by the ITA this fall – took out Notre Dame’s Julie Sabacinski, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinal round before downing Baylor’s Karolina Filipiak, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Eichkorn will now face Chrissie McGaffigan of Notre Dame Sunday morning with the tournament title on the line.

In other action, Gabriela Mejia and Kayla Rizzolo have advanced all the way into the semifinals of doubles play, which will also resume on Sunday

Mejia defeated her teammate Danielle Mills in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3, before falling to McGaffigan in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-3.

McGaffigan also faced Miami in doubles play, teaming with Sabacinski to defeat Mills and Bistra Otashlyska, 9-8 (3).

Rizzolo’s singles run was ended in the quarterfinals Saturday with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Filipiak.
