Four 'Canes Advance Into Quarterfinals of Clay Tournament

BRADENTON, Fla. –The University of Miami women’s tennis team placed four student-athletes into Saturday’s quarterfinal round of singles play at Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
Bianca Eichkorn, Kayla Rizzolo, Gabriela Mejia and Danielle Mills all advanced past the first two rounds of singles play, while both of UM’s doubles teams still remain in contention for a title.
“We competed well,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “We set some goals coming in and overall we were able to accomplish those things today.”
After a first round bye, Eichkorn cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bibiana Almeida of Florida Gulf Coast. Eichkorn will face Notre Dame’s Julie Sabacinski on Saturday.
Rizzolo also advanced to the third round of singles play, beating Oklahoma State’s Malika Rose, 6-3, 6-3 after a first round bye.
Mejia also moved into the third round after a bye and a second round win over Mississippi State’s Danielle Terpko, 6-1, 6-2.
In her first action in nearly two months, Mills won her first two singles matches with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Iris Rendon of FGCU in the first round before a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the second round over Aya Bara.Mills will play Mejia in Saturday’s third round.
Bistra Otashlyska won her first round match over Elizabeth Hall of Mississippi State, 6-0, 6-1, before falling in the second round, 2-6, 6-7 (3) to Oklahoma State’s Sarah Meghoufel.
In doubles play, Rizzolo and Mejia (8-1) and Mills and Otashlyska (8-5) picked up wins over teams from Oklahoma State.
