Nieto Advances to Texas Invitational Quarterfinals

CORAL GABLES, FLA. – Junior Santiago Nieto of the University of Miami men’s tennis team went 2-0 in singles play on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals at the Texas Invitational in Austin.

 

The Key Biscayne native won a pair of matches in straight sets on the opening day, cruising past Lamar’s Diego Snyder, 6-1, 6-0, and then knocking off Marquette’s Jonathan Schwerin, 6-3, 6-3. He will play on in Saturday’s B-Draw semifinals at 12:15 p.m.

 

“Santiago has been competing very well this fall,” said assistant Miami coach CJ Weber. “He put together two very focused matches today, and I look forward to seeing how he will do on Saturday.”

 

Senior Christian Blöcker dropped his match in the A-Draw’s Round of 32 to host Texas’ Sudanwa Sitaram, 6-4, 6-4, and then bounced back in the consolation bracket. The 72nd-ranked Blöcker defeated Texas Tech’s Ryan Ybarra, 6-4, 6-3, and then earned a second-round bye. He plays on in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday at 11 a.m.

 

In doubles competition, Blöcker and Nieto downed Marquette’s Dan Mamalat and Jonathan Schwerin in Round of 32 doubles action, 8-6.  The Miami duo then defeated Texas-San Antonio’s Kolby Kilgo and Jannick Junger, 8-5, and will continue doubles play in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 11 a.m.

 

“Today was a really long day,” said Weber. “We are going to get some good rest tonight and be prepared for another long day of competition tomorrow.”
