Oct. 29, 2010

SKILLMAN, N.J. – University of Miami senior Bianca Eichkorn has earned an at-large bid to next week’s 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, as announced by the ITA on Friday.

The tournament, which will run from Nov. 4-7 at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, will feature the nation’s top men’s and women’s collegiate tennis players in the country.

Eichkorn, who is 6-2 this fall and ranked 14th nationally by the ITA, is one of 32 singles players on the women’s side set to compete.

Others participating in the tournament include champions from USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the USTA/ITA National Small College “Super Bowl” champions, the doubles champions and singles quarterfinalists from the D’Novo/ITA Men’s and Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, as well as other at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee.

Hurricanes have had success in recent years at the indoor championships. In 2004, Megan Bradley won the singles title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Suzi Babos of Cal. Two years later, Audra Cohen defeated Jelena Pandzic of Fresno Pacific, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to claim another championship for Miami. Last season, Laura Vallverdu claimed the singles consolation title while reaching the semifinals of the main draw in doubles with Gabriela Mejia.

Eichkorn’s fall singles season was highlighted by winning the first flight title of the Miami Invitational with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over Michigan’s 12th-ranked Denise Muresan to cap off a perfect 3-0 tournament.

Last season, the native of Tengen, Germany went 31-5 overall and 23-0 in dual match in singles to earn All-America honors.
