Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team is set for its first tri-meet of the season, traveling to face Florida Gulf Coast and Florida State at the Morcom Aquatics Center in on Sat., Oct. 23 in Tallahassee, Fla., at 11 a.m.

Miami (1-0) is competing against its first Atlantic Coast Conference opponent this year, and is looking to take down the Seminoles for the first time since 2000-01. The Seminoles have won eight consecutive against the Hurricanes in head-to-head scoring meets. Against FGCU, the `Canes have won two of the last three meetings, but it was the Eagles taking a 195-99 win last season in Fort Myers.

Saturday’s event serves as the third consecutive year all three teams are meeting for a tri-meet. Last year’s event took place in Fort Myers, while UM played host in 2008-09 as the season-opener for all three teams.

UM fifth-year head coach Christie Shefchunas has led the `Canes to four straight dual meet wins dating back to last season. UM closed the 2009-10 season with wins over Nebraska, Illinois and FIU, respectively.

In their last meet, the `Canes took down cross-town opponent FIU, 188-54, at the Norman A. Whitten University Center Pool on Oct. 15 in Coral Gables. Against the Panthers, the `Canes collected wins in 11 of 14 events. They were led by a host of swimmers, including junior transfer Kelsi Hall (Yorktown, Ind.) establishing a Miami season-best time of 23.13 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle.

Joining Hall with team season-best performing times on the day was junior transfer Whitney Stephenson (Grass Valley, Calif.) in the 200 freestyle; Christine Anderson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in the 1000 freestyle; Sofia Johansson (Ramlösa, Sweden) in the 100 breaststroke; and senior Deidre Novotny (Palm Harbor, Fla.) in the 200 individual medley.

The divers for the Hurricanes swept last weekend’s event against the Panthers, led by freshman Thea Vock (Clermont, Fla.) on the 1-meter springboard with 315 points. Junior transfer Carrie Dragland (Woodinville, Wash.) followed on the 1-meter board with 310.65 points.

The Florida State Seminoles are 3-0 on the year, while holding an all-time record of 22-11 against the Hurricanes in head-to-head matchups. Among the `Noles wins this year, they have defeated in-state opponents Nova Southeastern and Florida Atlantic. This weekend meet will also be FSU’s weekend of supporting Breast Cancer Awareness, with the month of October serving as the designated month for spreading information and awareness about the disease.

The Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast enter Saturday’s meet with a 1-0 record on the year after defeating Florida Atlantic on Oct. 9 by a 170-114 edge. The Eagles finished in fourth place behind the Hurricanes at the All Florida Invite to begin the month, finishing the event with 547 total points.
