Two Hurricanes Advance at ITA Regional Championships

GAINESVILLE, FLA. – Seniors Eduardo Pavia and Waylon Chin of the University of Miami men’s tennis team were each victorious in their Round of 64 matches on Friday to lead the Hurricanes and advance at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Regional Championships at the University of Florida.

 

Pavia (5-2), who is in his first season competing for Miami after transferring from Ball State, enjoyed a first-round bye and went on to defeat USF’s Roman Deridder, 6-1, 7-6 (4) on Friday. He will face No. 43 Clint Bowles of Florida State in Saturday’s Round of 32 at 9 a.m.

 

Chin knocked off former teammate Ignacio Taboada, now playing for Georgia, 7-5, 6-4, on Friday. He will take on Florida’s 105th-ranked Bob van Overbeek, a 9-12 seed, in Saturday’s Round of 32 at 10:15 a.m.

 

Senior Carl Sundberg, ranked No. 96 in the nation and seeded eighth in the tournament, junior Santiago Nieto and freshmen Omar Aly and Gabriel Flores all dropped singles matches on Friday, but will play on in the consolation round on Saturday.

 

Flores will face Taboada, who is 0-2 versus Hurricanes in 2010, on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by Sundberg versus Stetson’s Dedrik Berg at 1 p.m., Aly versus Stetson’s Cesare Gallo at 1 p.m. and Nieto versus Georgia’s Will Oliver at 1:30 p.m.
