Steinbruch Ties Scoring Mark in Hurricanes' Win
Oct. 1, 2010
CLEMSON, S.C. –
The University of Miami women’s soccer team won their first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season in a 3-0 victory over Clemson at Riggs Field.
Freshman Tara Schwitter’s 26th minute goal was all the scoring the Hurricanes (7-3-1, 1-1-0 ACC) needed as Vikki Alonzo made five saves, recording her fourth shutout of the season.
The game-winner came on a Cassidy Banks corner kick that found the foot of Ashlee Burt inside the box. Schwitter then headed Burt’s pass just over the charging goalie, hitting the bottom of the cross bar before landing over the goal line.
Miami’s second goal of the match affected the school’s record book. Sophomore Jordan Roseboro took a pass from Brittney Steinbruch and scored her second goal of the season in the 58th minute.
With the assist, Steinbruch tied Britney Butcher (2001-04) as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 73 points.
The Hurricanes added a third goal in the 72nd minute on a perfectly-timed play. Banks picked up her second assist of the game when she found freshman Kelly Griffin on the right side. Griffin then delivered a perfect cross into the box that Lauren Singer one-timed into the left side. The goal was the second of the season for the Mt. Sinai, N.Y. native.
The `Canes dominated all facets of the game, out-shooting Clemson (5-6-0, 0-3-0 ACC) 16-10. Every time the Tigers seemed to have a scoring chance, Miami’s defense – led by Brittney Macdonald and Ali Brennan – brought it to a hault.
Prior to the season, the Hurricanes teamed-up with UM alum Kristen Kenney’s MALAIKA FOR LIFE organization in Scoring Goals to Save Lives. The premise of the initiative sees the soccer program donate $10 to the charity for every goal scored throughout the season. The three goals from the `Canes increased this season’s total to $220.
Last season, Miami scored only 20 goals over 19 games. After only 11 games this season the offense has been more consistent and UM has already tallied 22 goals from 11 different scorers.
The Hurricanes return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 7 when they will host Duke at 7:30 p.m. at Cobb Stadium. That evening the women’s soccer program will team up with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
The price of tickets will be waived and donations to breast cancer research will be strongly encouraged. In addition, the `Canes will be wearing pink jerseys that will be auctioned off with those proceeds also benefitting breast cancer research.
