Sept. 26, 2010
ATHENS, GA. – Freshman Gabriel Flores of the University of Miami men’s tennis team battled back from a first-set loss to win his quarterfinal singles match on Sunday, advancing to this afternoon’s semifinals on the third day of competition at the University of Georgia’s Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
After dropping the first set 6-4 to junior Dusan Miljevic of Georgia Tech, Flores came storming back with the 6-3, 6-0 decision to improve to 4-0 in his first collegiate tournament.
“Gabriel is proving himself to be a great competitor,” said assistant coach CJ Weber. “After a slow start, he hung on and kept fighting, and by the end of the match, he was playing great tennis again.”
“Play moved indoor due to rain,” added head coach Mario Rincon. “Gabriel adjusted well to the conditions, especially for playing an opponent with much more indoor experience.”
Flores will face senior Alex Zotov of Vanderbilt in Division II semifinal action this afternoon. The winner advances to Monday’s finals.
Due to the inclement weather, consolation matches for Keith Crowley and Carl Sundberg were cancelled.
