In the opening match of the 2010 Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic, the Hurricanes women’s soccer team (2-2-1, 0-0 ACC) fell to the Arkansas Razorbacks (2-1-0, 0-0 SEC) by a 1-0 score, Friday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
For the third time in as many games, Vikki Alonzo saved a penalty kick. This time, the Carrollton, Texas native kept Miami within striking distance.
With her team leading 1-0, Arkansas’ Allie Chandler took her shot to the left, but Alonzo read it the whole way and made the diving stop.
“Vikki shows up at the times we need her, unfortunately we are getting calls against us that are creating PK’s for the other team,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “I think she has done a fantastic job to save them and that save today was probably the best of the three.”
Arkansas’ Erin Moskos broke a scoreless tie 11 minutes into the second half. Her first goal of the season came after a long entry pass bounced over the UM back line. Unfortunately, Alonzo slipped on her way to intercept it and Moskos was left with a virtually empty net, scoring with her right.
The first half saw each team get their scoring opportunities. Arkansas biggest chance came 24 minutes into the contest when Kelsey Allison goal was negated after an offside call.
The remainder of the half belonged to the ‘Canes. On back-to-back offensive possessions, Jordan Roseboro drove a perfect cross to Brittney Steinbruch, whose shot went just wide. Just seconds later, Roseboro and freshman Blake Stockton executed a perfect give and go. Roseboro’s shot got behind the diving keeper, only to hit the right post and deflect away from danger.
For the game, Steinbruch led all players with five shots. Roseboro and Stockton each recorded a pair and senior Katie Oddo added a shot as well.
“I thought we played well, we created opportunities to win. I’m obviously disappointed in the result, but we will regroup and focus on Kent State,” added Taliaferro.
Kent State, which plays tournament host Florida Gulf Coast Friday evening, will face Miami Sunday at 11 a.m.
